All employers have a duty to provide the use of Personal Protective Equipment PPE, at work when needed. This to protect the user against any H&S risks at work.

In the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, it clearly says you are to ensure that the provision is made for suitable storage to protect personal protective equipment from damage, contamination or loss.

Maintenance.

PPE must be properly looked after and stored when not in use, e.g. in a dry, clean cupboard. If it is reusable, it must be cleaned and kept in good condition.

  • using the right replacement parts which match the original, e.g. respirator filters
  • keeping replacement PPE available
  • who is responsible for maintenance and how it is to be done
  • having a supply of appropriate disposable suits which are useful for dirty jobs where laundry costs are high, e.g. for visitors who need protective clothing
  • Employees must make proper use of PPE and report its loss or destruction or any fault in it.

Part of your responsibility is to check PPE, if certain items are not used you need to check why and if they are actually needed; all equipment can be monitored for wear and tear.
