What to do with Empty or Idle Pallets

Pallets are something we use regularly to get things done and to keep our items safe. However, they can be a bit of a pain when they’re not in use! Even the busiest warehouses can find themselves dealing with empty pallets from time to time. Due to their size and bulk, rehoming them until they are next needed can be quite difficult. If some of your pallet racks are becoming cluttered with unused pallets, then we are here to help.

Identify where you’re going to keep them

The first thing you should do is figure out where they are going. Many places recommend storing pallet racks outside and under a tarp or cover as needed. However, for warehouses that often face harsh weather conditions, this may not be a suitable option. If you have the indoor space to stack pallet racks, consider using that space first to minimise the number of pallets that must remain outdoors.

Look for safety hazards in your storage area

Of course, this included the big things such as uneven ground, low ceilings or overhands that can cause further damage. However, special attention must be given to anywhere you plan to store your pallets. Be sure to keep them away from flammables, compressed gasses, or other hazardous substances that wood is sensitive to.

As well as this, keep other commodities a minimum of 25 feet away from your pallets. If you plan to store your excess pallets on other warehouse racking, make sure your sprinkler system is specifically designed for the type of shelving you use.

Keep good form

While stacking pallets, be sure to keep everything well-organised and tidy to prevent any potential accidents. Limit each stack to the same type, size and shape of the pallet, including the material it’s made from, to keep everything uniform and prevent spills. While sorting them, make sure the racks are further divided by quality, staying aware of breakage.
